Return address labels stickers are small adhesive labels printed with a name and postal address, made to go on the top left corner of an envelope or parcel. The most common size is 2/3 inch by 1 3/4 inch (about 17 by 44 mm), which fits four lines of text. Larger labels, around 1 by 2 5/8 inches, give room for a logo.
Most people buy them in sheets or rolls. A sheet usually holds 30 to 80 labels, while a roll can hold 250 to 1,000. Prices vary a lot, but a pack of 250 plain labels often starts at roughly $8 to $15.
Sizes and layouts that work
Pick the size by how much you need to print. A name, street, city and postcode need about four short lines. Add a business name or a small icon and you need a taller label.
- Small rectangle, about 17 x 44 mm: name and address only
- Medium rectangle, about 25 x 67 mm: address plus logo
- Round, 25 to 38 mm: a short line of text or a monogram, best for sealing envelope flaps
- Square, 50 mm: parcels, with room for a thank you line
Keep a margin of at least 2 mm around the text. Printers drift, and a cut that clips the postcode is annoying to discover after 500 labels.
Paper, gloss or waterproof material
Matte paper is the cheapest and takes ink well, so it suits letters and cards. It marks easily when wet, though. Gloss paper looks sharper for logos but can smear if you write on it with a pen.
For parcels that travel in rain or cold, vinyl is the safer pick. It resists water and scuffs, and the printed address stays readable. Clear labels look neat on kraft envelopes, but the adhesive shows on dark stock, so test one first.
A permanent adhesive is standard. If you want to move a label, ask for removable adhesive instead, which lifts off most paper without tearing it.
Printing at home or ordering printed labels
Home printing works when you only need a few sheets. Use sheets made for your printer type, inkjet or laser, because laser heat can melt the wrong adhesive inside the machine. Set the page scale to 100 percent. Fit to page settings are the usual cause of text that sits off the label.
Once you pass about 200 labels a month, professionally printed rolls tend to cost less per label and look more consistent. They also save the time spent feeding sheets through a printer.
Return labels for small business packaging
Sellers often use the same label style across packaging, so the return address matches the rest of the parcel. If you are building a full set of business stickers, keep the same fonts and colours on the address label, the seal sticker and any thank you card.
Anyone sending candles or melts has extra rules. Products in this category need hazard text on the pack, and the return address does not replace it. Our notes on clp wax melts cover what has to appear, and the guide to clp labels for wax melts explains typical sizes for small packs. Those labels go on the product, while the return label goes on the outer parcel.
Checking the address before you print
Spell out the details exactly as the postal service lists them. Include the postcode or ZIP code on its own line, and add the country in capitals for international mail. A missing apartment or unit number is the single most common reason a returned parcel never comes back.
Print one test sheet on plain paper, hold it against an envelope, and check the position. Then print the real run.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size are standard return address labels?
The usual size is about 2/3 inch by 1 3/4 inch, or roughly 17 by 44 mm. It holds three to four short lines of text. If you want to add a logo, move up to a label near 1 inch tall.
Can I put return address stickers on parcels?
Yes. For parcels, a larger label of around 50 by 75 mm is easier to read, and a waterproof vinyl finish copes better with handling. Place it on the top left of the largest flat face, away from tape seams.
Are return address labels waterproof?
Standard paper labels are not. Vinyl or polyester labels with a suitable ink resist water, and many are also rated for outdoor use. Check the product description before buying if the parcel will be exposed to rain.
How many labels do I need?
A household that sends cards and bills may use 100 to 200 a year. A small online seller shipping 20 parcels a week will go through about 1,000 a year, so a roll is usually more practical than sheets.
